> About Us

The name BAHLOO means "Moon Spirit", the protector of young women in Aboriginal lore.

BAHLOO is an Indigenous community initiative.

In consultation with Indigenous youth, a task force of people concerned by the homelessness highlighted in the Burdekin Report, established Bahloo in 1991. Our residents are 90% Indigenous and 10% non-Indigenous. We support them through the SAAP Case Management Process.

BAHLOO WOMENS YOUTH SHELTER ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED was officially opened in March 1991 by respected community elder, Aunty Jessie Budby and the Minister for Aboriginal and Islander Affairs, the Hon. Mrs. Anne Warner.

BAHLOO was incorporated under the Associations Act 1991 on 16 April 1993. Our aims are to develop and strengthen individual and community interests. We provide social, educational, health, welfare, cultural, sporting and recreational programmes to meet the needs of our residents and community.
